Vaccination

Now, the world has been stirred up by the appearance of the coronavirus which has also reached Indonesia and Bali. The spread of the coronavirus today not only comes from foreigners anymore but it is already caused by local transmission. Many preventive ways were implemented by the local government and the good news is Bali has the lowest death number cases, only 27 cases were reported until now per July 13 by www.worldometers.info. But, we should keep prevent ourselves to dismiss the spread of the virus, we should not be careless because it will just damage our surroundings.

It’s been six months since researchers in China said they had identified a novel coronavirus spreading in the city of Wuhan. And in Bali, we have already through the last three months with quarantine ourselves at home. How all of us during the quarantine by working at home, school, and learning at home, doing social distancing, and other things to prevent the spread of the virus to our environment. Now, even there are no vaccines, the government taking a risk to try to reopen Bali slowly with the new normal protocol, where people start allowed to go outside and doing activities normally.

The fact is the coronavirus still spreading all around the world, and the number of positive cases also keeps increasing day by day. We need vaccines to protect the body against the disease it causes, Covid-19. This version of the coronavirus only surfaced in late 2019, but scientists have gotten a boost from research on similar coronaviruses that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Efforts to fight those diseases played a role in the record speed of the COVID-19 vaccine trials that are underway.

Why is a coronavirus vaccination important?

The virus spreads easily and the majority of the world’s population is still vulnerable to it. Having a coronavirus vaccination would provide some protection by training people’s immune systems to fight the virus so they should not become sick. This would allow lockdowns to be lifted more safely, and social distancing to be relaxed.

When will we have a coronavirus vaccination?

A vaccine would normally take years, if not decades, to develop. Researchers hope to achieve the same amount of work in only a few months. Most experts think a vaccine is likely to become widely available by mid-2021, about 12-18 months after the new virus, known officially as SarsCoV-2, first emerged. That would be a huge scientific feat and there are no guarantees it will work. Four coronaviruses already circulate in human beings. They cause common cold symptoms and we don’t have vaccines for any of them.

Is it ok traveling to Bali without having a vaccination?

It would not be right to claim that any country, be it our home country or a place we wish to visit these days is 100% safe. Based on the scientific data the world has gathered now about the coronavirus and knowing the fatality rate and the way it is spreading, the virus is indeed a threat.

However, how much of a threat you face if coming to Bali, really depends on your individual circumstances, your actions and behaviors, and the level of precautions you take. And of course, to a certain extent, we depend on the professionalism of government authorities and also businesses that facilitate transportation, travel, etc.

The risk to get infected might be as low or high as in any other country that is not classified by the WHO as high-risk areas, such as China or Italy. If you are elderly or have an underlying health condition, you should carefully consider if you should travel at all these days. Indonesian authorities and particularly the ones in Bali have shown that they take the situation seriously and have implemented several regulations and procedures that have been executed quite well. But of course, there is no guarantee, there is always room for improvement, and we all still learn how to deal with this.
